Germans race bulls too, but with a difference

Jockeys lined up on Sunday afternoon for heats in the small town of Münsing in southern Bavaria for the sixth ox race held in the town.

This was bull-running – but Bavarian style.

Unlike in Spain, where many villages hold bull runs in the summer, the competitors in Münsing were riding the bulls. And of course this being Bavaria, they were clad in lederhosen and wore felt hats.

Around 10,000 people turned up to watch the racing take place under glorious sunshine and in temperatures upward of 30 degrees, Stern reports.

Not every bull felt the desire to complete the course. But the eventual winner was Bazi, ridden by local jockey Michael Pfatrisch.

The jockey told Stern that the secret was feeding him his favourite food, apples, directly from the hand.
