iPhone 11: Specs, pricing, rumors, release date, more

  • July 24, 2019

It’s once again time to turn our attentions to what is probably the most influential smartphone launch of the year — the new iPhone.

Must read: iOS 12.4 draining your iPhone battery fast? Here’s what you should do

WWDC 2019 is a distant memory, and iOS 13 is in beta (and is at that quite awful place), so it’s time to have a think about that the new iPhone might have to offer.

So what do we know about the next iPhone?

Well, the first mystery is the name.

iPhone XI seems the most likely pick (for now, at any rate), following in the footsteps of the iPhone X and iPhone XS/XR (where X is pronounced “ten,” although given how many people I know call it “X,” there’s clearly a lot of brand confusion out there). But I’ve come across a number of other possible names:

  • iPhone 11
  • iPhone Xs
  • iPhone X Plus

Another possibility is that Apple simplifies the line-up and switches to calling the new iPhone simply iPhone.

What about the release date?

Well, the timeline that we were used to was a September launch. However, when Apple launched the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus in September 2017, the iPhone X didn’t land for another month. Last year, the iPhone XS and XS Max launched in September, with the cheaper iPhone XR following on in October. The consensus this time around is that Apple won’t be staggering releases this year, so we can expect the new iPhones to land in September.

Now let’s move on to the interesting stuff.

What about the tech specs?

The latest credible rumor from 9to5Mac is that iPhone 11 lineup will consist of three models — known as ‘D42’ (iPhone 11), ‘D43’ (iPhone 11 Max) and ‘N104’ (iPhone 11R) — powered by a new A13 processor, incorporate the Lightning port (no move to USB-C), and an ‘all-new’ Taptic Engine.

Coming to the camera, the iPhones that will replace the iPhone XS models will feature three cameras embedded into what looks like a square module. One of those cameras will be a wide-angle camera designed for a feature called Smart Frames that captures the area around the outside of photos and video, allowing for reframing during editing.

The front-facing camera will also support 120-frames-per-second slow motion.

There’s also a rumor that Apple is working on an iPhone that ditches expensive laser emitter used by the Face ID and brings back Touch ID, that would retail for around the 5,000 yuan ($730) price point, which is the preferred price point in the Chinese market.

What will it look like?

Here are some of the beat renders I have seen.
