Myanmar jails Aung San Suu Kyi for 3 years over election fraud

A Myanmar court found Aung San Suu Kyi guilty of electoral fraud, sentencing her to three years’ imprisonment on Friday.

The ruling adds more jail time to the 17 years she is already serving for other offenses, including corruption and incitement.

It also throws the future of her National League for Democracy party into disarray as the military-run government had threatened to disband it before the promised elections next year.

Suu Kyi won a landslide victory in the November 2020 elections in Myanmar, but was ousted in a military coup in February 2021.

Accusing the NLD leader of orchestrating widespread voter fraud the military moved in to stop Suu Kyi’s party from forming a new government.

Co-defendant Win Myint, the deposed president, was given the same sentence, a source told Reuters.

She denies all allegations against her.
