Rummenigge to step down as European Club Association chairman

  • August 10, 2017

The Bayern Munich CEO announced on Thursday that he would not be a candidate for re-election when his latest term in office expires next month.

“Following intense, successful, and good years I believe the time has come to pass on the responsibility,” Rummenigge said in a statement released by the ECA following a board meeting in Madrid.

“I have always believed this office should only be held for a limited amount of time. My withdrawal from office expresses my sincerity concerning this issue.”

During his nine years as chairman, the ECA has worked to give clubs a direct say in decision-making in European football and its membership has grown from 137 to 220 clubs.

“We can be proud of what we achieved in cooperation with world and European governing bodies FIFA and UEFA,” Rummenigge said. “All of our players are now insured for all international fixtures and the clubs now receive compensation when their professionals participate in a World or European Championship.

“Furthermore, the clubs now have two seats on the UEFA Executive Board and are thus involved in scheduling the match calendar and other vital decisions concerning the clubs.”

Rummenigge’s successor will be appointed at the next ECA board elections, which will take place on September 5 in Geneva.
