Players are bought and sold by clubs.
The documents seen by Reuters show Mendes’ third-party ownership went much further than previously thought. His agency came to hold stakes in more than 50 top players by late 2015, according to a signed contract between Fosun and Gestifute.
There was nothing to prevent Fosun from buying a football club, which could freely own players’ economic rights without Fosun breaching the ban on third-party ownership.
Still, Fosun remained keen to work with Mendes.
Fosun toyed with buying another Portuguese club and an English club, emails show.
