Late Night Lies Are No Laughing Matter

  • April 30, 2019

Stephen Colbert lied to attack President Trump this week. Again. It’s the new normal for late night “comedians.”

Stephen Colbert couldn’t resist.

Former Vice President Joe Biden finally announced his 2020 presidential campaign. Naturally, “The Late Show” host had to talk about it. And, given the program’s uniformly leftist slant, Colbert couldn’t find much fault in Biden’s video announcement.

Colbert went one giant step further, though.

The far-left host accepted Biden’s inaccurate claim that President Donald Trump praised white supremacists nearly two years ago following a Charlottesville, Va. protest which left one woman dead. If you listen to the president’s full comments he made it clear he’s didn’t praise the white supremacists who took part in the fatal protest.

All you have to do is let the audio tape roll.

It’s the lie the media can’t stop telling. Academy voters even honored director Spike Lee for including the lie near the end of his 2018 film “BlacKkKlansman.” Lee earned his first Oscar for co-writing the film.

Naturally, Biden took the bait, knowing the very same media wouldn’t fact check him. Reporters stood down, right on cue.

Colbert followed suit.

He began, with what else, a complete misrepresentation of actual news.

“Donald Trump is still president? Did anyone read the Mueller Report,” Colbert asked. Yes, that’s the report that found no collusion between Trump and Russia. Seems like an important detail, the kind that would be exonerating for any clear-eyed reader.

Even a comedian.

Then Colbert moved on to Biden’s Charlottesville attack line. He dubbed the ad both “powerful” and “true,” and a potent way to put the president on the defensive.

Amazing.

The problem here goes beyond Colbert’s lie – spread via a major broadcasting company – CBS.

It’s not the first time late night hosts have lied through their teeth. How many comics pounced on the alleged “pee tape,” perhaps the fakest of all recent fake news items.

Colbert gleefully talked up the Steele Dossier “bombshell” during this “pee tape” bit, too, mocking Trump for calling it phony. Now, pundits are demanding it be resigned to the “dustbin of history.”

More distortion, especially since no one had proven the salacious details of the dossier then, let alone now.

Two years ago, the host of “Late Night with Seth Meyers” got up on his high horse to attack Trump. The subject? Meals on Wheels, a program the president allegedly gutted, according to Meyers.

During the “A Closer Look” segment of Thursday’s episode of Late Night, the host bashed Trump for planning to slash a program that feeds the elderly. “How dead inside do you have to be to not want old people to get food?,” he asked. “Your heart is so small it makes your tiny hands look like catcher mitts.”

Only it proved to be more Fake News.

Meals on Wheels does get some money from the CDGB. But the vast majority of its funding comes from elsewhere, and as even the leftists over at Snopes state, “the effect of CDBG cuts on local Meals on Wheels groups is uncertain.” Only 3 percent of the Meals on Wheels budget nationally comes from the federal government at all, and only a portion of that comes from the CDBG. Walter Olson of the Cato Institute explains that 35 percent of federal funding for Meals on Wheels comes from the Older Americans Act, not the CDBG; no cuts have been contemplated to that program yet.

Did any media outlet fact check Meyers’ rant? Did the far-left host apologize on or off air?

Of course not.

The grand daddy of all Fake News stories remains the Russia Collusion hoax. Late night hosts spent two years telling us Trump colluded with Russia.

Did they apologize after the Mueller Report? Of course not. As you just read, Colbert insists the report should have removed Trump from office. That’s how delusional he is.

Let’s move on to Jimmy Kimmel. The far-left host of “Jimmy Kimmel Live” is loving his new life as a pundit. That’s partly because only conservative web sites will fact check him. The rest of the media landscape regurgitates what he says or outright cheers him on.

The Daily Wire’s Ben Shapiro didn’t follow the herd after Kimmel repeated CNN’s false claim regarding U.S.-based school shootings.

It was a lie. Shapiro proved it, and he had plenty of company.

So the next time you read a survey saying Americans get some, if not the majority, of their news from late night comics be afraid …. very afraid.
